What
Sound Cocoon lets the Nobi light play a soft, steady sound in the resident’s bedroom at night. The sound masks sudden noises, such as ongoing care outside of the resident’s bedroom.
Sound Cocoon is off by default. You configure it for each resident in the Housing unit tab of the resident’s settings, where you choose the sound type, volume, schedule and when the sound plays. You can also configure it when you add a new resident.
Within the schedule, the sound can play only when the resident is in bed, during the entire period, or as a bedtime wind-down that starts before the resident goes to bed.
- The Sound Cocoon volume is automatically based off of the light’s volume. If the light volume is low, the Sound Cocoon volume is low too. If the light volume is 0, the Sound Cocoon volume is 0, even if you set it to the maximum.
- On older light software, it is only possible to play Sound Cocoon when the resident is in bed. The other play behaviors are greyed out. Update the light to use them.
- If you do not see Sound Cocoon, check the housing unit type and your role.
- Sound Cocoon is muted during a fall, or a resident call from a peripheral paired to the resident’s housing unit. It keeps playing during a resident call from the resident’s wearable call button, or an assistance call made by care staff with their Badge or the Nobi Mobile App.
- The light does not install updates while Sound Cocoon is playing. It updates once the sound has stopped.
When is a resident “in bed”?
- In bed: the resident lies in bed. Sitting on the edge of bed after sleeping still counts as the resident being in bed, so the sound keeps playing.
- Not in bed: the resident sits on the edge of the bed before lying down, stands up, or leaves the bed. The sound starts only once the resident lies down.
Why
Nights in a care home are rarely quiet. Sudden noises can wake a resident again and again. Sound Cocoon gives the resident a steady, calm background sound that makes these noises less disturbing, helping them rest through the night.
For care staff, Sound Cocoon runs by itself once it is configured. The light follows each resident’s schedule and play behavior, with no action needed during the night.
Before you start
- You need the Manager role.
- The resident lives in a single-person housing unit or in a private room of a Jack and Jill housing unit.
- There is an onboarded Nobi light in the resident’s bedroom. Only this light plays the sound. A light in the bathroom or in another room never does.
- Smart monitoring is on for the resident. Without smart monitoring, the light works only as a light, and Sound Cocoon does not play.
- The volume of the light is not set to 0.
- The light has a software version that supports Sound Cocoon. If not, you see a message with a link to update the light.
Detailed steps
- Click on Residents in the left menu.
- Find the resident and click edit.
- Choose the Housing unit tab.
- Find Sound Cocoon and set the switch to ON.
- Choose the settings:
- Type: choose the sound.
- Noise Masking (White Noise): a bright sound. Masks higher-pitched noises, such as voices.
- Gentle Sleep (Pink Noise): a softer, balanced sound. This is the default.
- Deep Calm (Brown Noise): a deep, low sound. Masks lower noises and helps to calm.
- Volume: a number from 0 to 100. The default is 10. Keep it low. The sound should be just loud enough to mask noise.
- Schedule: the start time and end time. The default is 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. The schedule can run past midnight. Sound Cocoon never plays outside the schedule.
- Play behavior: choose when the sound plays within the schedule.
- Only when resident is in bed: plays when the resident lies in bed, stops when they get out of bed and resumes when they lie down again.
- During the entire period: plays during the whole schedule, also when the resident is not in bed or the room is empty.
- As a bedtime wind-down: starts at the start time, also before the resident is in bed. If the resident does not go to bed, it plays until the end time. Once the resident is in bed, it works like Only when resident is in bed.
- Type: choose the sound.
- Optional: click Listen on Nobi light to test the sound. The light in the bedroom plays the sound with the chosen type and volume. The sound keeps playing until you click Stop the sound. After that, the light follows the schedule again.
