What
Sound Cocoon is a feature of the Nobi light that allows the light to play a soft, steady sound in the resident’s bedroom at night. This sound can be white, pink, or brown noise.
You choose for each resident when the sound plays, which type of noise plays and how loud it is.
How it works
A sound might not wake someone only because it is loud, but because it stands out from the quiet around it. In a very quiet room, closing a door can be a jump in sound, which can wake the resident. A steady background sound makes sudden noises less disturbing.
Sound Cocoon fills the room with a soft, steady background noise. The noises outside do not become quieter, but they stand out less. This means they are less likely to wake the resident.
The sound types
You can choose from three sound types:
- Noise Masking (White Noise): a bright sound. Good to mask higher-pitched noises, such as voices.
- Gentle Sleep (Pink Noise): a softer, balanced sound. This is the default.
- Deep Calm (Brown Noise): a deep, low sound. Good to mask lower noises and to calm.
When the sound plays
You set a schedule, for example from 10 PM to 7 AM. The sound never plays outside the schedule. Within the schedule, you choose how the sound plays:
- Only when resident is in bed: the sound plays when the resident lies in bed. Sitting up on the edge of the bed during the night still counts as in bed. The sound stops when the resident gets out of bed, and starts again when they lie down again.
- Continuously: the sound plays during the whole schedule, in bed or not.
- As a bedtime wind-down: the sound starts at the start time, also before the resident is in bed. This is a gentle sign that it is time to settle down. If the resident does not go to bed, it plays until the end time. Once the resident is in bed, it works like Only when resident is in bed.
Sound Cocoon is muted during a fall, or a resident call from a peripheral paired to the resident’s housing unit. It keeps playing during a resident call from the resident’s wearable call button, or an assistance call made by care staff with their Badge or the Nobi Mobile App.
Why
Nights in a care home can be noisy: closing doors, voices and activity outside the resident’s room can wake a resident again and again.
Broken sleep has an effect during the day too. It can lead to:
- Less sleep: residents wake up several times per hour.
- More agitation: noise plays a part in agitation in people with dementia.
- More falls: poor sleep affects balance and reaction time.
