What
For Nobi, a fall is when a person ends up at a lower level by accident and stays sitting or lying on the floor for a set number of seconds. When this happens, Nobi creates a fall escalation. Caregivers are alerted quickly through the escalation procedure.
Nobi does not detect motion. Nobi analyzes poses.
Nobi’s optical sensors take an image every second. Nobita takes one every five seconds. The light processes this image on the device itself. The AI turns the person into a stick figure. It then looks at where the person is compared to the bed and the floor.
Nobi distinguishes three poses:
- Standing
- Sitting
- Lying down (bed or floor)
When Nobi detects a person sitting or lying on the floor, it starts a fall escalation. The speed of the fall does not matter. Nobi detects slow falls as well.
The resident must give informed consent for the smart features before Nobi can work as a smart light with fall detection. Learn more about smart monitoring here.
Why
Falls can happen in many ways. Some are sudden. Others are slow and almost silent. For example, a resident might slide down from a chair or slowly lose their balance when getting out of bed.
Nobi’s fall detection looks at posture. It checks whether someone ends up on the floor, not how fast they fell. This is why Nobi detects both fast and slow falls.
Nobi keeps watch in the background at all times, ready to act when a real fall happens.
A typical shift with Nobi’s fall detection
It is early afternoon. A resident stands up from a chair and slowly loses their balance. They slide down until they are sitting on the floor. There is no loud impact or sudden movement.
The Nobi light detects a person sitting on the floor and starts a fall escalation. Caregivers are alerted in the Nobi Mobile App or through the escalation channels that are set up.
Later that evening, another resident slips while getting out of bed. Their posture changes from standing to lying on the floor. Once again, Nobi detects the pose and starts a fall escalation.
Care teams respond quickly. No one had to press a button or shout for help. Nobi works quietly in the background and is ready to help your team on every shift.
